You should visit your doctor when back pain is accompanied by any of the following:
Red flags include-
- Your symptoms are severe.
- The pain is keeping you from doing things that you normally are able to do every day.
- The problem does not go away within a few days.
- Recent history of fever, chills or unexplained weight loss.
- Recent bacterial infection (e.g.,urinary tract infection);IV drug abuse; or immune suppression (from steroids, transplant, or HIV).
- If you also have problems controlling your bowel or bladder.
- If you feel numb in the groin or rectal area.
- If there is leg, foot, or hip weakness.
- Pain that worsens when supine; severe night time pain.
- Major tauma, such as vehicle accident or fall from height.
- Minor trauma or even lifting (in older or potentially osteoporotic patient)
- Previous history of cancer.
- Age under 20 or over 50.
